HALF A DOZEN STUN STICKS ARE POINTED AT MARIA and me, and we raise our hands in surrender. This is bad. Really bad.
Harlowe sniffs the air. âThe place reeks of magic.â She steps up to the table and flips through the spell book. âPracticing magiciancraft inside the Bureau is strictly forbidden.â
âWe have permission,â says Maria. âPrime Minister Merlinââ
âIs sadly frozen at the moment,â Harlowe interrupts. âAnd Prime Minister Bane has made his position on magicians crystal clear. Curious timing, this lesson. Trying to recruit young Amari here for whatever you and Dylan are planning next, are you?â
I lean forward to protest, but Maria beats me to it. âThatâs not whatâs happening, and you know it.â
Harlowe waves a dismissive hand. âIâve heard enough. Take her away, please.â
âWait!â I say. âYou canât!â
The agents escort Maria to the door anyway. She gives me one last look and mouths the words âthe windsâ to me over Harloweâs shoulder.
Director Harlowe smiles and takes the seat opposite me.
I shake my head, my hands balled tight in my lap. âYou canât be serious about arresting Maria Van Helsing.â
Director Harlowe purses her lips. âIâd be far more concerned with yourself, young lady. Practicing spells inside the Bureau, thatâs a big no-no.â
âIt really was an order from Prime Minister Merlin,â I say. âThat I be taught magic to help the supernatural world and prove magicians can be good.â Not to mention it will give me a chance to win the Great Game. âItâs actually really important.â
âYou donât need magic to do either of those things,â says Harlowe. âSo why is it really so important? Anything you want to confess?â
As if Iâd tell herâtalking to her might as well be talking to Bane. I grit my teeth and say, âIt just is.â
âIt just is,â Harlowe repeats, then sighs heavily. âHonestly, I blame myself. I thought by making you an Elite youâd be grateful. That youâd come to value and honor this wonderful institution as I have, not befoul it with that awful magiciancraft.â
âMy magic isnât awful,â I say. âAt least, it doesnât have to be.â
Director Harlowe shrugs.
âYou donât even care,â I snap. âBecause of what happened to your parents, youâll always see magicians as the bad guys.â
Harloweâs eyes flash, but itâs quickly replaced by the pleasant act she does so well. She folds her hands and smiles. âPlease keep Lord and Lady Harloweâs names out of your mouth.â
âI only meant that what happened to them was terrible, but that was Moreau, not me or Maria. Youâre arresting her for nothing!â
She raises an eyebrow. âThe Prime Minister needed someone to be guilty, dear, and we decided on Maria.â
âB-but thatâs wrong,â I say. âIâll tell people what youâre doing.â
Harlowe pouts her lips mockingly. âAnd whoâll believe you? Maria is the only way you have to speak to your brother, is she not? So it stands to reason that youâd be oh-so-desperate to keep her from going away . . . maybe even desperate enough to lie?â She grins and leans in close. âSee how easy that was?â
How can she twist the truth like that? âYouâre horrible.
